Dr. Janet Hou was born in Dallas, Texas and grew up in Sugar Land, Texas. She was drawn to caring for the animals around her from an early age. Her childhood pets included ducks, hamsters, turtles, rabbits and two miniature poodles named Tiger and Rascal. Those pets helped nurture her dream to work with animals and she decided to be a veterinarian when she was 13 years old. Dr. Hou earned both of her degrees, a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology and Management in 2000 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2004, from Texas A&M University.
Prior to working at Last Wishes, Dr. Hou worked in small animal veterinary hospitals in Dallas, the Woodlands and Houston, Texas. Working at these hospitals, she developed both her interests in feline medicine and helping families care for their pets with chronic and geriatric conditions. Dr. Hou is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Feline Practitioners, Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association and the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture. Dr. Hou serves on the board of Save a Purrfect Cat Rescue and a foster cat or two usually occupies her home. She also volunteers for Vita-Living, a charity that supports children and adults with disabilities. Dr. Hou is currently studying to become a certified veterinary acupuncturist through the Chi Institute of Chinese Medicine. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, cooking, painting and spending time with her two rescue mutts Maddy and Olivia and her cockatiel Sonata.
Dr. Hou understands the importance of the close relationship between pet owners and their beloved companion. She strives to ensure each pet will be comfortable and peaceful in his or her end of life experience.
